One day while working on a $22,000 landscape lighting project, the idea for Sophiana came to me like a bolt of lightning. The folks we were working for had the money, but not the time nor want to install these lights themselves. However, the cost of parts was around $6000 dollars. Everything else was labor and overhead. Here is the crazy part. The lights we were installing are powered by a 12-21-volt transformer. IT’S SAFE. ANYONE CAN DO IT! Sure, you may need an electrician to install a receptacle to power the transformer or a handyman to burrow under your pathways but almost everyone can do the rest.
I started looking online at the best manufacturers of low voltage landscape lighting. They offer fixed landscape lighting packages and feeble “how to” videos. But not one manufacturer offered to help design your landscape lighting installation nor did they offer custom packages suited specifically for Your home. On the other end of the buying spectrum, I started to look at what was available to the public in stores. Big Box stores that constantly preach the DIY way carry poorly made landscape lighting kits. Typically, their lights are plastic. We install forged bronze fixtures that feel more like weapons, not plastic fixtures that will be destroyed in one season, either by inclement weather or landscapers.
I identified multiple needs. The first need is for all of us to be able to afford the best kind of LED low voltage landscape lights. The second need is for all of us to feel confident in our ability to install these lights. Why? Because it is EASY! And the idea for Sophiana was born.
